Acne, unfortunately for many is an ongoing concern. Many Suffer from this skin issue at different points in their lives. It can be difficult to find a treatment that works well for your skin and without added irritation. In this week’s blog, we are taking you through all the steps on how you can calm your skin and treat those nasty breakouts with ZO Skin Health at The Dorchester Clinic. But first, let us take a look at what acne is.
What is acne?
Acne is the formation of various different types of pimples. Acne is highly linked to hormonal activity and therefore is more prominent in teenagers, but can begin at any point in life. There are 6 main types of pimples that are found within acne.
Nodules- Large lumps that form beneath the skin, these can be very tender and painful, often feeling hard to the touch.
Blackheads- Small dark coloured lumps, they are not filled with dirt but appear dark due to the colour produced within a hair follicle.
Cysts- Well known for causing scarring as well as small indentations in the skin. They are large lumps filled with pus. Cysts can be very painful and appear extremely inflamed.
Papules- Smaller inflamed lumps that may be sensitive.
Whiteheads- Firm spots, similar to blackheads but will not always release when squeezed.
Pustules- They appear to have a white tip in the centre of the area which is due to a build-up of pus.
What is the Acne Prevention & Treatment Program?

Using ZO Skin Health’s anti-acne products, we have created a treatment program to help relieve, reduce and prevent the symptoms and signs of acne. These products are formulated with gentle and effective skincare to deal with sensitive, sore and irritated skin. Treatment programs are personalised to YOU and your acne. Taking into consideration your skin type, budget and concerns, a program will be formed to suit your needs. There is however a baseline of products that can be used within this treatment, although there may be added or fewer depending on yourself.
What products are used?
As mentioned previously, there is a baseline of products that will be used during your treatment program. Let us take a look at what those products are and what their purposes are.
Exfoliating cleanser- Targets surface oil, leaving skin feeling refreshed. A gentle exfoliator that does not leave skin feeling dry. Containing vitamin E for its antioxidant properties.
Exfoliating polish- Using magnesium crystals to take away dead skin cells and leave skin feeling clean and smooth. Prevent clogged pores and also contains vitamins C and E for their antioxidant properties.
Complexion renewal pads- These pads are moistened with glycolic acids for deeper exfoliation and texturised to assist with this. They reduce oiliness and help to calm and soothe irritated skin.
Sulfur/complexion clearing masque- Formulated to cleanse pores and absorb excess oil, this masque prevents future breakouts as well as leaves your skin feeling hydrated. The sulfur reduces sebum whilst the glycerin helps restore your natural skin barrier.
